Since 2021, I've been System Administrator at On Site Personnel, a Philadelphia staffing firm stuck on TempWorks and SQL Server 2000.

The software was built for industrial staffing — a small niche with few vendors. That means bad system design, bad support, and constant hiccups. The UI had fields and flows users weren't supposed to touch. Click the wrong thing and payroll data gets recorded wrong, reports break, invoices go out wrong, job assignments get messed up. There was no validation system, no constraints to prevent it. Like the cartoon trope: a machine with a "DO NOT TOUCH" button. Except here, the button wasn't labeled — you only learned which ones they were after the damage was done.

Software designed to automate work was causing more manual work and mistakes. We had to double-check everything the system did. And we couldn't switch easily. We evaluated alternatives, but they had trade-offs: some had ATS but no native payroll, others outsourced payroll to ADP, and some forced rigid schedules like weekly payroll on a fixed day only. TempWorks and Avionte were the only ones with full ATS + payroll + flexible pay schedules. In 2024, we finally migrated to Avionte. They wanted $20k just for a migration quote. While they migrated, we kept running TempWorks. Two database exports: one for mapping in July, one for go-live.

That's when I realized: you shouldn't need a PhD or $200K to modernize your data. You should own the process. If we can reduce the entry barrier for software vendors to serve small niches — or help companies build in-house — the whole market changes. No more vendor lock-in. No more $20k quotes to leave.
